French Quarter Cigar Bar Wins Political Fight to Stay Open

Nice to see the nannies get it handed to them on occasion...

A political body often awash in collegiality, the New Orleans City Council let some rare resentment surface Thursday (June 4) before voting to carve out an exception in the city's zoning laws for a French Quarter cigar bar.

Yup. The cigar bar wants to keep operating. It's not infringing on anyone's rights. If you don't like smoke, don't frequent it, and don't work there.

Cuban Cigars. Are They Really Better?

I have not smoked a wide selection of Cuban cigars (I have had a few). The ones I had were of high quality, but they packed a little more power than I was comfortable with. As a result, I usually stick to South and Central American Cigars.

Famous Smoke has a nice article that addresses a lot of issues that might pop up if the Cuban embargo is "thawed".

With a production model that only uses Cuban tobacco and limited real estate to grow said tobacco, this model of rolling Cuban puros is doomed to stretch resources extremely thin to the point where they will likely sacrifice quality across the board, including EMS cigars, to meet demand. Queen and country won’t be too happy about this, but lifting the embargo to create this mess is just another way America can be a thorn in the side of the English.

Idiots in the Senate Are At It Again

They can't seem to mind their own business...

Senators Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn.; Dick Durbin, D-Ill.; Jack Reed, D-R.I.; and Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., proposed new legislation that would increase the federal tax on cigarettes by 94 cents and “set tax rates for other tobacco products at an equivalent rate.” The International Premium Cigar and Pipe Retailers Association (IPCPR) estimates that rate to be 37.4 cents per cigar.

Mitchell Orchant Releases a New Cigar

In 2012, Mitchell Orchant—best known for being the managing director of C. Gars Ltd, a family of stores in the U.K.—launched Inka Secret Blend Cigars, a collection of Peruvian puros made in partnership with Gennaro Lettieri of Tabacalera del Oriente. Inka Secret Blend offered Orchant the ability to not only offer cigars that tasted rather different than the wide array of Cubans and “new world” cigars his customers normally had access to, but also at a substantial value.

Cigar Use Doubled! That's Not a Bug, It's a Feature.

THAT'S the finding of a study in the US where the consumption of cigars doubled from 6.2 million in 2000 to more than 13.7 billion in 2011 - in contrast with a 33 per cent reduction in cigarette consumption over the same period.

Excuse me while I LOL. Twice 6.2 million is not 13.7 billion. :) How can we trust these smoke nazis' data if they can't even add two numbers together?
