As you have figured out, some places are better than others, but many have something good going for them.
As for cigar discussion forums, you may have noted some of them are better than others too, but hey, better a late answer than none.
A few well-known, well-established and well-thought-of online vendors are Cigars International (CI), Famous Smoke Shop and JR Cigars. All three also run online cigar auctions where sometimes incredible bargains can be had. JR runs daily "Dutch" auctions where recently I picked up a box of Romeo y Julieta Love Storys for $52. These perfectos sell everywhere for $90 to $115.
Several places, CI and Famous included, run daily or even hourly free shipping specials on a certain item. CI's is found at the CI site as "Joe Cigar". Famous has theirs at a remote site called Cigar Monster. Earlier today the Monster, which changes hourly, offered a 5-pack of Sancho Panza robusto for $10 to your door. Hard to beat.
I also like Atlantic Cigar and for bundle brands I like Holt's. How about another couple? Best Cigar Prices, Finck's Cigar Company, Cuban Crafters. Cuban Crafters sells only their own cigar lines, Finck's sells their own Texas-made cigars and national brands and Best sells national brands only.
I can tell you that Arnold's in NY and Jack Schwartz in St. Louis provide terrific customer service and that Arnold's offers one of the best "first time buyers' deals anywhere.

I recommend highly cigarbid.com Know your prices, don't be jerk and bid things up. You are hard pressed to find 5/10 packs or boxes at a better price if you're patient. Two boutique vendors that I utilize regularly are taboo.com (Texas) and cubancrafters.com (Miami). Both have wonderful and unique offerings and can be value priced, especially the sales. Try the taboo sampler. Cuban Crafters have excellent house cigars (I like their cuban) and the La Carolina and 1959 are personal favorites. If you are looking for Cuban cigars and live in a North America region where they are permitted, you should check 1001cubancigars.com They have box and multi box specials that are very difficult to beat.

A larger number of sites sell their products online but amazon and ebay are the most successful and reliable sites. So if your required products are there then prefer them to buy from there.
