Ashing
Posted on: 02/06/2009 03:53 PM
I think it's neat too. A long ash on the cigar. Got a 5 inch perfecto with a 3 inch ash on it, that's cool.

BUT,

how often does it get away from you? You say to yourself "Oop, better ash it - d'oh!" and it drops to the floor with that characteristic heavy thud sound so surprising for mere ash.

Yesterday I went 3 for 4, two on my pants’ leg and once to the floor. I am sure my average is less than thrice a day (how often do you get to use "thrice" in talking cigars?) , but close to almost every day wouldn’t surprise me.

What about you? Wrecking your good shirts? Your carpets? Your marriage?

Rarely make an ash out of myself.

I dunno -- I guess I pay attention to the cigar, so the ashtray is in receipt well before the ash dumps anywhere else.

My brother likes big ash too....I prefer a tight ....well, a tightly packed cigar is important, I think. Anyway, I agree with ROTHNH, it's about the cigar.

I don't know what paying attention to the cigar has to do with it.

Among the "3 of 4" I mention was a 3/4 inch firm white ash at the start of a Churchill.

How often do you ash a cigar? Do you ever get as much as an inch?

Ever see the 'ash trimmers'? Always rolling the cigar in the tray, keeping the coal free of ash.

Typically if there is more than 1/4 inch of ash on the end, I am looking for somewhere to de-ash. The only exception is the first 1/2 inch of the cigar when the ash is still totally intact. I will usually leave that to see how tight the ash is packed.

An interesting sidebar .... seems like leaving at least a little ash on the end of the cigar results in a more even burn and a little slower burn....not so hot. I don't know if this is really true, but it SEEMS to be true. That is, I tend to get an uneven burn when the coals are exposed. Has anyone else noticed this ?

I'm with Putt on this -- after the first 3/4 inch or so, it's dropped in the ashtray, then every 1/2 to 3/4 inch after that.

Im big on keeping as much ash on there as I can. On a 5" robusto I only ashed twice (and it was not purposly).

I do on the other hand, try to strategically ash my cigars. When i do this I make sure that at the end of the smoke I have atleast and inch on there. That keeps the heat down and makes the finish much more pleasurable!

Knowing your cigar will give you an indication of how much ash you can leave on your gar. The idea of leaving enough ash gives it a chance to stay cool and smoke cooler rather than ashing too much. The ash acts as insulation to keep the draw cool and seeing how tight it is gives you an indication of how well it was rolled and the color tells you a lot as well.
